1.       Pray to begin the quiet time

It’s time to give thanks and praises to the Lord for all He has done. When you praise the Lord His presence will be with you for He inhabits the praises of His people. When in a quiet time it’s time to spend in the presence of God and all we need is His presence. So first praise and worship Him before anything else.

2.       Read a passage from the bible expecting to hear from God

Psalms 119:18 “Open my eyes, that I may see Wondrous things from Your law.”

Choosing your daily bible reading passage

  • Choose a book from the Bible of which you read few verses everyday
  • Choose a personality from the Bible whose life story you follow
  • You can take passages suggested in Bible study guides
  • Choose bible topics and read verses as per the topic

3.       Meditate – think through and soberly reflect on what you have read

If you don’t think through what you have read you lose major part of the blessings.

2Timothy 2:7”Consider what I say, and may the Lord give you understanding in all things.”

  • Read the passage slowly
  • Don’t read a very long passage unless it is necessary
  • Stop at ay verse that strikes you and think about it
  • Think about the meaning of the word or words you are reading eg you can check out their meanings in a dictionary.
  • Think about how the scriptures can be applied in your life
  • Memorize one verse
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand the word.

Ephesians 1:17 “that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him”

4.       Ask yourself questions

When you ask yourself questions according to the text and answer them, the word will make sense to you and you will easily remember what you read and put it into practical practice in your life.

Examples of questions could be:

  • What does the passage teach me about the nature of God?
  • What can I do to put this verse into operation in my life?
  • Is there a promise for me to believe and if so, are there any conditions attached? You can claim the promises
  • Is there a command for me to obey
  • Is there a good example I should follow?

5.       Write down whatever the Lord tells you

Whatever strikes you, encourages you write them down for your future references. You can write down the promises or things you have understood you need to do or stop doing.

6.       Spend time praying to the Lord

The last step in your quiet time is to pray. During the prayer times, God will speak to you through the Holy Spirit. There are things that God needs to tell you directly through His Spirit, the Holy Spirit is real and you must believe in Him as well.
