How do we resist temptations?

resisting temptation

Mathew 26:41 “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Most of us fall into temptations because we don’t ask for God’s help. Remember we can’t overcome on our own. We cannot resist that desire to compromise all by ourselves, we cannot break any addiction by our own strength we need God’s help. When you humble yourself and ask for God’s help He will give you the power to overcome.

I know we all want to do the right thing not to compromise i.e. the spirit is willing. It’s not enough to have the desire but you have to pray so that your inner man may get stronger in that area. If you get your inner man stronger than your outer man then you will resist the temptation every single time.

  1. Don’t wait till you are in the middle of the temptation to ask God for His help, pray ahead of time.
  • Jesus was about to be crucified he knew difficult times were ahead of him he prayed before time. After he prayed the scripture says angels came and strengthened him. Jesus told Peter to pray so that he doesn’t enter into temptation but he never prayed but told Jesus that he can’t deny him, a few hours later he denied Jesus three times.
  • If Jesus saw it necessary for him to pray, and told us to pray so that we don’t enter into temptation that tells me this should be a part of our everyday lives. If you recognize God as your source of your strength you are going to have power to resist that you never felt before.
  1. Don’t put yourself in situations where you know you will be tempted.
  • You can’t pray &tell God to help you from an addiction then you go out & hang out with people that enable you.

2 Timothy 2:22 “Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”

  • If you play with fire you will get burnt.
  • Spirits are transferable (Caleb & Joshua story). You hangout with a jealous person enough & you will end up jealous. Put yourself in a different environment.
  • Portiphar’s wife seduced Joseph but Joseph not only prayed but also avoided her.
  1. Avoid the wrong people, places, channels
  • Joseph tore himself away and left his coat when she grabbed him. Sometimes we have to leave our coats to avoid temptation

1 Cor 10:13-14 “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.”

  • Temptations at first seem good, inviting, appealing & we think that we only live once, it doesn’t hurt anything everybody else is doing it. Don’t be deceived behind that pleasure there is a hidden razor blade. The pain of discipline is temporary but the pain of compromise is permanent. It’s hard to resist but do you know that it’s harder to live in bondage.
