Why do we face trials and troubles?

inuliwa.com trials and persecutions

Trouble is an event that causes distress or pain, a trial on the other hand is an annoying or frustrating or catastrophic event. Jesus forewarned us that we shall undergo hard times, persecutions and trials will come into our lives.

The pondering question on our mind is why I should go through this or that? Let me discuss the advantages of trials, troubles, persecutions basing my facts in the Bible.

Our Lord Jesus Christ promised us the Holy Spirit who was going to be our helper after Jesus was glorified and raised from the dead. John 14:26 “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”

The Holy Spirit has several gifts that we as Christians should exhibit in our day to day lifes. They are wrapped up by love and self control. Galatians 5:22-23”But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”

When troubles, trials, persecutions come in our lives we should display the fruits of the Holy Spirit as our response to those situations.

In a school setup you only know a student has understood or not only by giving them a test and how they perform will surely depict whether or not they understood or not. The same case with us Christians we are taken through certain situations so that we can prove that we are mature and whether we are truly dedicated followers of Christ.

Every person is positive and of good character when everything is going well; they are in good health, no financial crisis, surrounded with cooperating friends/colleagues. But when a difficult situation pops up they tend to blame God, themselves and also blame others.

When things aren’t going your way it is an opportunity to grow, and to practice the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

We can only know we have a certain gift of the Holy Spirit only after being put in the exact opposite situation and later you act directly opposite the worldly norm then after you do that we approve you as having that particular gift. For example, longsuffering is the ability to patiently enduring continual wrongs or trouble or endurance of pain or unhappiness. When someone is supposed to meet you at 10:00 am and he or she comes at 6:00 pm how would you act or respond to him or her? If you will be at ease and understand his or her explanation without being offended or complaining then it means you are patient otherwise if you complain and give all the reasons why he or she did that then it means you are not patient.

With that said why should we face trials, troubles, persecutions?

1.      We live in the world where our enemy is the prince of the air

Ephesians 2:2 “in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience”

The enemy is satan and we live in this world where he is termed as the prince of the air. I would like we take a scenario of you house if a friend comes and start opposing you and giving you wife orders, yelling at your children would you just sit back and tell him slowly to behave? Certainly not you will chase him away because you believe and know you are the king in your house. The same case with the devil once we proclaim Jesus as our Lord and savior we become his number one enemies and he will do whatever he can to bring you down and to sabotage you.

2.      So that we can be tested and proven for service

Revelation2:10 “Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life

Here we see that we as Christians we have been forewarned that we shall be tested so that our faith will be weighed. Do we really have complete faith and confidence in the Lord Jesus Christ? Then in times of discouragement, trials, troubles, unlikely situations we should put faith in the Lord to death and you will get the crown of life.

3.      For Gospel’s sake

Mark10:29-30”So Jesus answered and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My sake and the gospel’s, who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time–houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions–and in the age to come, eternal life.”

If you leave all that you own surely you will face rejection, objections, discouragement and persecutions first and foremost from your relatives, wife, husband, children, community and also your friends. They will see that you are doing the wrong thing, stupid ideas just for the sake of preaching the good news.

In some countries like in the Middle East Christians are killed and assassinated this are persecutions that Jesus said. Those who get born again in families that they are practicing certain occult or other religions most certainly the newly convert will be rejected because of the Gospel.

But we are urged to be faithful to the end since the crown of life will be given and also eternal life.

4.      So that you can pray

James 5:13”Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms”

Some of us have not being praying and giving thanks to the Almighty. So a problem may come through your way so that you can remember to pray and also to come closer to God.

Paul was converted through a terrifying scenario he was blinded for several days. He may have gone through that so that he would not doubt that Jesus talked to him and also he fel on his knees and fasted for three days. I wonder whether it was just a voice from the heavens maybe he would not accept it because he was a diehard Jewish official who thought killing the early Christians was doing a good service to God.

Have you stopped praying and giving God thanks because you have all you need? Let us remember the Lord in times of trouble and times of happiness.
